Game Drive

Yesterday we went to a game reserve and did a game drive. It was absolutely incredible and I felt like I was in heaven! As Steve described it, it was like going to a reverse zoo--we were going into their habitat to view them. We sat in an open truck and had an incredible guide who told us all about every animal. And, his English was great! It was a true African safari with Giraffes, Warthogs (I’m already sick of seeing them), so many types of Antelopes, Rhinos, Baboons (not enough of those), Crocodiles, so so many birds, Springbok and so many that I know I am forgetting. Then, we had lunch at the lodge—I had a wrap with Springbok meat. It was a little salty but otherwise very good!
The landscape around here is absolutely gorgeous. The smell of the dry air and dirt is so refreshing; I can’t get enough! It’s been so fun getting to explore the country and to get out of the city today. I have seen many of these animals before, but never in their own habitat and so up close. I am having an incredible time so far!
We had a pool party when we got home yesterday afternoon—it was not nearly as hot. Maybe 85-90 degrees F in the sun. But, we had to get out when the clouds rolled in and the thunder and lightening began! This morning we leave with Uanee for the sand dunes. It is about a 4-5 hour drive. We will camp on Friday night and hike before the sun comes up on Saturday. We will hopefully be at the top of Big Daddy to see the sunset! It will be a long drive, but should be beautiful!
It has been storming here all night and is still pouring down rain…it’s feeling a little bit like home. Although we were excited to leave the rain in Seattle, it is very good to see rain here. Namibia is in a huge drought. Everything is so dry—the grasses are hardly green and the riverbeds are dried up. So, the rain is a good thing!

Female warthog--you can tell the difference because females only have 2 warts under their eyes. Males have a total of 4.

The male croc wouldn't come out of the water

We were so lucky to see the only to Rhino at the reserve!
